Imperial War Museum Duxford

Refurbishment works within a live museum and operational airfield environment
Imperial War Museum Duxford is one of the UK’s leading aviation museums, attracting visitors year-round while supporting live airfield operations.

Sinden was appointed by the Imperial War Museum to carry out refurbishment works within Hangars 3 and 4. The project included internal strip-out, alterations and upgrades to selected areas, alongside external works to Hangar 3, all delivered within a live museum setting.

Works were delivered within a fully operational and publicly accessible museum, alongside visitors, staff and ongoing activities.

Maintaining safe access, protecting the visitor experience and keeping the wider site fully operational required careful planning and control throughout.

The airfield environment also brought additional constraints around access, security and working procedures.

Our Approach

We focused on getting the logistics and coordination right from the outset, working closely with museum teams to understand how the site operated day to day. This early engagement helped us plan around visitor flows and operational activity.

Work areas were clearly defined and kept separate from the public wherever possible, while deliveries and material movements were carefully managed to reduce disruption. Ongoing communication with stakeholders ensured works stayed aligned with daily operations.

All activities were carried out in line with IWM procedures, including permit systems and security requirements, allowing the project to progress safely within a sensitive, live environment.

Outcome
Refurbishment of Hangars 3 and 4 was completed to a high standard, with careful planning and coordination helping to keep disruption to visitors, staff and day-to-day activities to a minimum.
Despite the challenges of working in a busy public setting, the project was well managed throughout, resulting in improved spaces that enhance the museum while allowing it to continue running as usual – a good example of Sinden’s experience working in sensitive, operational environments.
