St Albans Cathedral

An award-winning heritage project combining modern functionality with meticulous conservation and craftsmanship
St Albans Cathedral is one of the UK’s most iconic religious buildings, blending more than a thousand years of architecture and including priceless Roman bricks.

Sinden delivered a new single-storey Welcome and Learning Centre, linking the Grade I listed Cathedral with its Chapter House. Works also included remodelling of the 1980s Chapter House to create education areas, a refurbished café, improved accessibility and upgraded services. The scheme demanded respect for historic integrity while integrating high-quality modern materials and sustainable techniques.

Delivering within a nationally significant heritage site demanded exact planning. The Cathedral remained operational, so works had to integrate the new Welcome Centre and remodelled Chapter House without disruption. Matching historic stone, flint and brick was critical for a seamless appearance. At the same time, accessibility improvements, a triple-door lift and modern services had to be introduced without affecting heritage features. Balancing these requirements in a live environment required precision, careful sequencing and collaboration.

Our Approach

Material accuracy

Archive research guided stone and brick selection. Original Bovingdon bricks were matched for size, colour and texture.

Specialist collaboration

With Simpson and Brown and York Handmade, over 4,000 differently shaped bricks were produced. Salvaged flint was reused with bespoke clay bricks and lime render for durability and thermal efficiency.

Craftsmanship

  • Ancaster limestone for dressed stonework
  • Yorkstone flags for Welcome Centre flooring
  • Spruce glulam beams, oak acoustic panels and engineered oak boards for interiors

Live-site sensitivity

The Cathedral stayed open throughout. Heritage fabric was protected, with previously concealed details revealed and retained for interpretation.

Outcome
The project has delivered a transformative Welcome and Learning Centre that enhances the visitor experience while preserving the Cathedral’s historic character. It provides improved education spaces, modern washrooms and step-free access, adding long-term value and accessibility. Combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design secures the building’s significance for generations to come. This approach has earned national recognition through multiple design and conservation awards, including the RIBA East Conservation Award 2021 and a Brick Awards Commendation for Public Building.
